Reclaiming the Human Space

Why the most beautiful car interiors in the world are failing the very people they were built to protect.

Do you ever worry that the designers of your sixty-thousand-dollar electric vehicle have never actually met a human being?

It is a question I find myself asking every time I strap a dummy into a sled for a high-velocity impact test. In my world, we look at the physics of what happens when a vehicle stops but the objects inside do not. We calculate the kinetic energy of a loose water bottle or a heavy smartphone.

But lately, my frustration isn’t just about safety; it’s about the fundamental betrayal of the “user experience” that happens the moment you actually try to live inside a modern, minimalist cabin.

We want dashboards that look like Scandinavian sideboards and center consoles that resemble polished slabs of obsidian. We want “clean lines” and “uncluttered surfaces.” The problem is that humans are not clean, and our lives are not uncluttered.

We carry things. We carry sunglasses that need to be reached without looking. We carry parking receipts that need to stay visible until we leave the garage. We carry lip balm, charging cables, loose change for the trolley, and half-empty bottles of electrolyte water.

The Negotiated Settlement

In the old days-and I’m talking about the era of the “messy” car-there was a negotiated settlement between the driver and the machine. It wasn’t always pretty, but it was functional.

You had the door bin for the heavy stuff, the little felt-lined cubby under the steering wheel for the gate clicker, and a glovebox that actually held more than a single pair of gloves.

Today, those ledges have been withdrawn. The designers have looked at the “clutter” and decided that the best way to solve the problem of people putting things down was to remove the places where things could be put.

The Tuesday Morning Physics Experiment

Consider a family of four, forty minutes into a weekend drive. They are in a stunning XPeng G9, a marvel of engineering and software. In a photograph, this interior is a sanctuary.

In reality, on a Tuesday morning heading toward a roundabout, it is a chaotic physics experiment. Because there are only four visible, deep storage locations, the “temporary” items have no home.

“Two phones, a parking receipt, and a packet of chewing gum are currently balanced on the dashboard, angled precariously against the windscreen. With every left turn, they slide in a slow, rhythmic dance toward the A-pillar.”

In the door bin, a bottle of water lies flat because the pocket is sculpted for a specific shape that doesn’t actually match the bottle the kid grabbed from the fridge. On the floor of the passenger footwell sits a sunglasses case. It sits there because it fits nowhere else.

Every single one of these objects existed in the family’s previous car, and in that car, every single one of them had a dedicated, understood place. By removing the ledges, the designers didn’t remove the objects; they simply withdrew the agreement.

I have to admit something here, and it’s a bit embarrassing for someone in my profession. For years, I was a minimalist evangelist. In my early days as a crash test coordinator, I used to lecture my friends about “cabin hygiene.”

I told them that a clear dashboard was a sign of a clear mind and a safer vehicle. I argued that anything not bolted down was a potential projectile. I was wrong.

I was wrong because I was prioritizing the “ideal” state of the vehicle over the “actual” state of the human. By advocating for cabins that lacked secondary storage, I wasn’t making people safer; I was making them more distracted.

The Distraction Metric

The time it takes to reach for a sliding phone. At 60 mph, you cover the length of a football pitch with your eyes closed.

A car that provides nowhere to put your things is a car that forces you to manage those things while driving.

The “clutter” we used to see in cars wasn’t disorder. It was an emergent settlement. It was a map of how a specific family used a specific space. The coins went in the door bin, the tissues went in the seat back, and the spare charging cable lived in the center console.

Everyone knew where the “map” was. When you wipe that map clean in favor of a flat, glossy surface, you aren’t creating peace. You are creating a vacuum that the users will eventually fill with chaos.

This is where the frustration peaks. When the interior becomes a mess because there are no places to put things, the design industry tends to read that mess as a failure of the user. “Look at these messy people,” the logic goes, “they are ruining our beautiful vision.”

I recently sent an email to my department head regarding some new sensor data. I hit send with a flourish, feeling very productive, only to realize thirty seconds later that I hadn’t attached the actual data file. The “thing” that made the communication valuable was missing.

Modern car interiors often feel like that email. They have the beautiful subject line, the professional signature, and the perfect font, but the “attachment”-the actual utility that allows a human to exist inside the machine-has been left behind.

We see this most clearly in the rise of the “all-screen” dashboard. While the screen is a magnificent tool for navigation and telemetry, it has also become a convenient excuse for designers to stop building physical architecture.

Why build a shelf when you can just make the screen bigger? Why design a tactile button for the glovebox release when you can hide it in a sub-menu? The result is a cabin that looks like a high-end electronics store but functions like a glass box.

Completing the Manufacturing Process

For owners of vehicles like the XPeng G9, the realization usually sets in about three days after delivery. You love the acceleration. You love the silence. But you are suddenly very aware that your phone is rattling against the plastic of the center console because there isn’t a rubberized mat to hold it.

You realize that if you drop a credit card into the “abyss” between the seat and the console, it is gone until the lease ends. This is why the aftermarket for these specific vehicles has become so vital.

It’s not about “modding” the car in the traditional sense; it’s about completing the manufacturing process. When people go looking for

Beyond the Dashboard

The deeper meaning here extends beyond cars. We see it in “hot-desking” offices where you aren’t allowed to leave a coffee mug or a photo of your dog. We see it in public squares where the benches are designed to be uncomfortable so that people don’t linger.

It is an architecture of exclusion, disguised as an architecture of elegance. It treats the human presence as a pollutant that must be managed and minimized.

In my lab, we don’t just test how the car protects the body; we look at how the interior survives the “usage cycle.” A car that is “pristine” but makes the driver frustrated is a car that is failing its primary mission.

The mission is to transport a human being from point A to point B with the maximum amount of ease and the minimum amount of friction. If I have to spend the entire journey worrying about my sunglasses sliding into the footwell, that is friction.

The solution isn’t to go back to the cluttered, button-heavy dashboards of . We can have the beauty of the modern EV while still respecting the reality of the human pocket.

It requires a move away from “photo-optimization” and back toward “life-optimization.” It means building in the hidden storage, the tactile edges, and the protective layers that allow us to actually use the vehicle without feeling like we are trespassing in a gallery.

Until the manufacturers catch up to the reality of how we live, we will continue to fill the gaps ourselves. We will buy the inserts, the protectors, and the dividers. We will restore the “settlement” that was taken away.

I’m going to go resend that email now, with the attachment this time. It’s a small thing, a tiny detail in a larger system, but without it, the whole effort is just a beautiful, empty gesture. Much like a dashboard with nowhere to put your keys.
